Fourth Sunday of Lent

READING OF THE DAY

First reading from the Book of Samuel
1 Sm 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a

The LORD said to Samuel:
“Fill your horn with oil, and be on your way.
I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem,
for I have chosen my king from among his sons.”

As Jesse and his sons came to the sacrifice,
Samuel looked at Eliab and thought,
“Surely the LORD’s anointed is here before him.”
But the LORD said to Samuel:
“Do not judge from his appearance or from his lofty stature,
because I have rejected him.
Not as man sees does God see,
because man sees the appearance
but the LORD looks into the heart.”
In the same way Jesse presented seven sons before Samuel,
but Samuel said to Jesse,
“The LORD has not chosen any one of these.”
Then Samuel asked Jesse,
“Are these all the sons you have?”
Jesse replied,
“There is still the youngest, who is tending the sheep.”
Samuel said to Jesse,
“Send for him;
we will not begin the sacrificial banquet until he arrives here.”
Jesse sent and had the young man brought to them.
He was ruddy, a youth handsome to behold
and making a splendid appearance.
The LORD said,
“There—anoint him, for this is the one!”
Then Samuel, with the horn of oil in hand,
anointed David in the presence of his brothers;
and from that day on, the spirit of the LORD rushed upon David.

Second reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Ephesians
Eph 5:8-14

Brothers and sisters:
You were once darkness,
but now you are light in the Lord.
Live as children of light,
for light produces every kind of goodness
and righteousness and truth.
Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.
Take no part in the fruitless works of darkness;
rather expose them, for it is shameful even to mention
the things done by them in secret;
but everything exposed by the light becomes visible,
for everything that becomes visible is light.
Therefore, it says:
“Awake, O sleeper,
and arise from the dead,
and Christ will give you light.”

GOSPEL OF THE DAY

From the Gospel according to John
Jn 9:1-41

As Jesus passed by he saw a man blind from birth.
His disciples asked him,
“Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents,
that he was born blind?”
Jesus answered,
“Neither he nor his parents sinned;
it is so that the works of God might be made visible through him.
We have to do the works of the one who sent me while it is day.
Night is coming when no one can work.
While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
When he had said this, he spat on the ground
and made clay with the saliva,
and smeared the clay on his eyes,
and said to him,
“Go wash in the Pool of Siloam” —which means Sent—.
So he went and washed, and came back able to see.

His neighbors and those who had seen him earlier as a beggar said,
“Isn’t this the one who used to sit and beg?”
Some said, “It is, “
but others said, “No, he just looks like him.”
He said, “I am.”
So they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?”
He replied,
“The man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes
and told me, ‘Go to Siloam and wash.’
So I went there and washed and was able to see.”
And they said to him, “Where is he?”
He said, “I don’t know.”

They brought the one who was once blind to the Pharisees.
Now Jesus had made clay and opened his eyes on a sabbath.
So then the Pharisees also asked him how he was able to see.
He said to them,
“He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and now I can see.”
So some of the Pharisees said,
“This man is not from God,
because he does not keep the sabbath.”
But others said,
“How can a sinful man do such signs?”
And there was a division among them.
So they said to the blind man again,
“What do you have to say about him,
since he opened your eyes?”
He said, “He is a prophet.”

Now the Jews did not believe
that he had been blind and gained his sight
until they summoned the parents of the one who had gained his sight.
They asked them,
“Is this your son, who you say was born blind?
How does he now see?”
His parents answered and said,
“We know that this is our son and that he was born blind.
We do not know how he sees now,
nor do we know who opened his eyes.
Ask him, he is of age;
he can speak for himself.”
His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews,
for the Jews had already agreed
that if anyone acknowledged him as the Christ,
he would be expelled from the synagogue.
For this reason his parents said,
“He is of age; question him.”

So a second time they called the man who had been blind
and said to him, “Give God the praise!
We know that this man is a sinner.”
He replied,
“If he is a sinner, I do not know.
One thing I do know is that I was blind and now I see.”
So they said to him,
“What did he do to you?
How did he open your eyes?”
He answered them,
“I told you already and you did not listen.
Why do you want to hear it again?
Do you want to become his disciples, too?”
They ridiculed him and said,
“You are that man’s disciple;
we are disciples of Moses!
We know that God spoke to Moses,
but we do not know where this one is from.”
The man answered and said to them,
“This is what is so amazing,
that you do not know where he is from, yet he opened my eyes.
We know that God does not listen to sinners,
but if one is devout and does his will, he listens to him.
It is unheard of that anyone ever opened the eyes of a person born blind.
If this man were not from God,
he would not be able to do anything.”
They answered and said to him,
“You were born totally in sin,
and are you trying to teach us?”
Then they threw him out.

When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out,
he found him and said, “Do you believe in the Son of Man?”
He answered and said,
“Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?”
Jesus said to him,
“You have seen him,
the one speaking with you is he.”
He said,
“I do believe, Lord,” and he worshiped him.
Then Jesus said,
“I came into this world for judgment,
so that those who do not see might see,
and those who do see might become blind.”

Some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this
and said to him, “Surely we are not also blind, are we?”
Jesus said to them,
“If you were blind, you would have no sin;
but now you are saying, ‘We see,’ so your sin remains.

Primera lectura

Lectura del libro del Génesis

Gn 12, 1-4a

En aquellos días, dijo el Señor a Abram: “Deja tu país, a tu parentela y la casa de tu padre, para ir a la tierra que yo te mostraré. Haré nacer de ti un gran pueblo y te bendeciré. Engrandeceré tu nombre y tú mismo serás una bendición. Bendeciré a los que te bendigan, maldeciré a los que te maldigan. En ti serán bendecidos todos los pueblos de la tierra”. Abram partió, como se lo había ordenado el Señor.

Segunda lectura

Lectura de la segunda carta del apóstol san Pablo a Timoteo

2 Tm 1, 8b-10

Querido hermano: Comparte conmigo los sufrimientos por la predicación del Evangelio, sostenido por la fuerza de Dios. Pues Dios es quien nos ha salvado y nos ha llamado a que le consagremos nuestra vida, no porque lo merecieran nuestras buenas obras, sino porque así lo dispuso él gratuitamente.

Este don, que Dios nos ha concedido por medio de Cristo Jesús desde toda la eternidad, ahora se ha manifestado con la venida del mismo Cristo Jesús, nuestro Salvador, que destruyó la muerte y ha hecho brillar la luz de la vida y de la inmortalidad, por medio del Evangelio.

EVANGELIO DEL DÍA

Lectura del santo evangelio según san Mateo

Mt 17, 1-9

En aquel tiempo, Jesús tomó consigo a Pedro, a Santiago y a Juan, el hermano de éste, y los hizo subir a solas con él a un monte elevado. Ahí se transfiguró en su presencia: su rostro se puso resplandeciente como el sol y sus vestiduras se volvieron blancas como la nieve. De pronto aparecieron ante ellos Moisés y Elías, conversando con Jesús.

Entonces Pedro le dijo a Jesús: “Señor, ¡qué bueno sería quedarnos aquí! Si quieres, haremos aquí tres chozas, una para ti, otra para Moisés y otra para Elías”.

Cuando aún estaba hablando, una nube luminosa los cubrió y de ella salió una voz que decía: “Éste es mi Hijo muy amado, en quien tengo puestas mis complacencias; escúchenlo”. Al oír esto, los discípulos cayeron rostro en tierra, llenos de un gran temor. Jesús se acercó a ellos, los tocó y les dijo: “Levántense y no teman”. Alzando entonces los ojos, ya no vieron a nadie más que a Jesús.

Mientras bajaban del monte, Jesús les ordenó: “No le cuenten a nadie lo que han visto, hasta que el Hijo del hombre haya resucitado de entre los muertos”.

First readind from the Book of Sirach
Sir 3:17-18, 20, 28-29

.

My child, conduct your affairs with humility,
and you will be loved more than a giver of gifts.
Humble yourself the more, the greater you are,
and you will find favor with God.
What is too sublime for you, seek not,
into things beyond your strength search not.
The mind of a sage appreciates proverbs,
and an attentive ear is the joy of the wise.
Water quenches a flaming fire,
and alms atone for sins.

Second reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Hebrews
Heb 12:18-19, 22-24a

.

Brothers and sisters:
You have not approached that which could be touched
and a blazing fire and gloomy darkness
and storm and a trumpet blast
and a voice speaking words such that those who heard
begged that no message be further addressed to them.
No, you have approached Mount Zion
and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem,
and countless angels in festal gathering,
and the assembly of the firstborn enrolled in heaven,
and God the judge of all,
and the spirits of the just made perfect,
and Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant,
and the sprinkled blood that speaks more eloquently than that of Abel.

GOSPEL OF THE DAY

From the Gospel according to Luke
Lk 14:1, 7-14

.

On a sabbath Jesus went to dine
at the home of one of the leading Pharisees,
and the people there were observing him carefully.

He told a parable to those who had been invited,
noticing how they were choosing the places of honor at the table.
“When you are invited by someone to a wedding banquet,
do not recline at table in the place of honor.
A more distinguished guest than you may have been invited by him,
and the host who invited both of you may approach you and say,
‘Give your place to this man,’
and then you would proceed with embarrassment
to take the lowest place.
Rather, when you are invited,
go and take the lowest place
so that when the host comes to you he may say,
‘My friend, move up to a higher position.’
Then you will enjoy the esteem of your companions at the table.
For every one who exalts himself will be humbled,
but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
Then he said to the host who invited him,
“When you hold a lunch or a dinner,
do not invite your friends or your brothers
or your relatives or your wealthy neighbors,
in case they may invite you back and you have repayment.
Rather, when you hold a banquet,
invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind;
blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you.
For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

Primera lectura

Lectura del Profeta Isaías

Is 66, 18-21

.

Esto dice el Señor:
“Yo vendré para reunir a las naciones de toda lengua.
Vendrán y verán mi gloria.
Pondré en medio de ellos un signo,
y enviaré como mensajeros a algunos de los supervivientes
hasta los países más lejanos y las islas más remotas,
que no han oído hablar de mí ni han visto mi gloria,
y ellos darán a conocer mi nombre a las naciones.

Así como los hijos de Israel
traen ofrendas al templo del Señor en vasijas limpias,
así también mis mensajeros traerán,
de todos los países, como ofrenda al Señor,
a los hermanos de ustedes
a caballo, en carro, en literas,
en mulos y camellos,
hasta mi monte santo de Jerusalén.
De entre ellos escogeré sacerdotes y levitas”.

Lectura de la carta a los Hebreos

Heb 12, 5-7. 11-13

Hermanos: Ya se han olvidado ustedes de la exhortación que Dios les dirigió, como a hijos, diciendo: Hijo mío, no desprecies la corrección del Señor, ni te desanimes cuando te reprenda. Porque el Señor corrige a los que ama, y da azotes a sus hijos predilectos. Soporten, pues, la corrección, porque Dios los trata como a hijos; ¿y qué padre hay que no corrija a sus hijos?

Es cierto que de momento ninguna corrección nos causa alegría, sino más bien tristeza. Pero después produce, en los que la recibieron, frutos de paz y de santidad.

Por eso, robustezcan sus manos cansadas y sus rodillas vacilantes; caminen por un camino plano, para que el cojo ya no se tropiece, sino más bien se alivie.

Lc 13, 22-30

.

En aquel tiempo, Jesús iba enseñando por ciudades y pueblos, mientras se encaminaba a Jerusalén. Alguien le preguntó: “Señor, ¿es verdad que son pocos los que se salvan?”

Jesús le respondió: “Esfuércense en entrar por la puerta, que es angosta, pues yo les aseguro que muchos tratarán de entrar y no podrán. Cuando el dueño de la casa se levante de la mesa y cierre la puerta, ustedes se quedarán afuera y se pondrán a tocar la puerta, diciendo: ‘¡Señor, ábrenos!’ Pero él les responderá: ‘No sé quiénes son ustedes’.

Entonces le dirán con insistencia: ‘Hemos comido y bebido contigo y tú has enseñado en nuestras plazas’. Pero él replicará: ‘Yo les aseguro que no sé quiénes son ustedes. Apártense de mí todos ustedes los que hacen el mal’. Entonces llorarán ustedes y se desesperarán, cuando vean a Abraham, a Isaac, a Jacob y a todos los profetas en el Reino de Dios, y ustedes se vean echados fuera.

Vendrán muchos del oriente y del poniente, del norte y del sur, y participarán en el banquete del Reino de Dios. Pues los que ahora son los últimos, serán los primeros; y los que ahora son los primeros, serán los últimos”.

LECTURA DEL DÍA

Primera lectura

Lectura del libro de Jeremías

Jer 38, 4-6. 8-10

.

Durante el sitio de Jerusalén, los jefes que tenían prisionero a Jeremías dijeron al rey: “Hay que matar a este hombre, porque las cosas que dice desmoralizan a los guerreros que quedan en esta ciudad y a todo el pueblo. Es evidente que no busca el bienestar del pueblo, sino su perdición”.

Respondió el rey Sedecías: “Lo tienen ya en sus manos y el rey no puede nada contra ustedes”. Entonces ellos tomaron a Jeremías y, descolgándolo con cuerdas, lo echaron en el pozo del príncipe Melquías, situado en el patio de la prisión. En el pozo no había agua, sino lodo, y Jeremías quedó hundido en el lodo.

Ebed-Mélek, el etíope, oficial de palacio, fue a ver al rey y le dijo: “Señor, está mal hecho lo que estos hombres hicieron con Jeremías, arrojándolo al pozo, donde va a morir de hambre”.

Entonces el rey ordenó a Ebed-Mélek: “Toma treinta hombres contigo y saca del pozo a Jeremías, antes de que muera”.

Segunda lectura

Lectura de la carta a los Hebreos 

Heb 12, 1-4

.

Hermanos: Rodeados, como estamos, por la multitud de antepasados nuestros, que dieron prueba de su fe, dejemos todo lo que nos estorba; librémonos del pecado que nos ata, para correr con perseverancia la carrera que tenemos por delante, fija la mirada en Jesús, autor y consumador de nuestra fe. Él, en vista del gozo que se le proponía, aceptó la cruz, sin temer su ignominia, y por eso está sentado a la derecha del trono de Dios.

Mediten, pues, en el ejemplo de aquel que quiso sufrir tanta oposición de parte de los pecadores, y no se cansen ni pierdan el ánimo, porque todavía no han llegado a derramar su sangre en la lucha contra el pecado.

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: “He venido a traer fuego a la tierra, ¡y cuánto desearía que ya estuviera ardiendo! Tengo que recibir un bautismo, ¡y cómo me angustio mientras llega!

¿Piensan acaso que he venido a traer paz a la tierra? De ningún modo. No he venido a traer la paz, sino la división. De aquí en adelante, de cinco que haya en una familia, estarán divididos tres contra dos y dos contra tres. Estará dividido el padre contra el hijo, el hijo contra el padre, la madre contra la hija y la hija contra la madre, la suegra contra la nuera y la nuera contra la suegra”.

LECTURA DEL DÍA

Primera lectura

Lectura del libro de la Sabiduría

Sab 18, 6-9

.

La noche de la liberación pascual fue anunciada con anterioridad a nuestros padres, para que se confortaran al reconocer la firmeza de las promesas en que habían creído.

Tu pueblo esperaba a la vez la salvación de los justos y el exterminio de sus enemigos. En efecto, con aquello mismo con que castigaste a nuestros adversarios nos cubriste de gloria a tus elegidos.

Por eso, los piadosos hijos de un pueblo justo celebraron la Pascua en sus casas, y de común acuerdo se impusieron esta ley sagrada, de que todos los santos participaran por igual de los bienes y de los peligros. Y ya desde entonces cantaron los himnos de nuestros padres.

Segunda lectura

Lectura de la carta a los Hebreos

Heb 11, 1-2. 8-19

.

Hermanos: La fe es la forma de poseer, ya desde ahora, lo que se espera y de conocer las realidades que no se ven. Por ella fueron alabados nuestros mayores.

Por su fe, Abraham, obediente al llamado de Dios, y sin saber a dónde iba, partió hacia la tierra que habría de recibir como herencia. Por la fe, vivió como extranjero en la tierra prometida, en tiendas de campaña, como Isaac y Jacob, coherederos de la misma promesa después de él. Porque ellos esperaban la ciudad de sólidos cimientos, cuyo arquitecto y constructor es Dios.

Por su fe, Sara, aun siendo estéril y a pesar de su avanzada edad, pudo concebir un hijo, porque creyó que Dios habría de ser fiel a la promesa; y así, de un solo hombre, ya anciano, nació una descendencia numerosa como las estrellas del cielo e incontable como las arenas del mar.

Todos ellos murieron firmes en la fe. No alcanzaron los bienes prometidos, pero los vieron y los saludaron con gozo desde lejos. Ellos reconocieron que eran extraños y peregrinos en la tierra. Quienes hablan así, dan a entender claramente que van en busca de una patria; pues si hubieran añorado la patria de donde habían salido, habrían estado a tiempo de volver a ella todavía. Pero ellos ansiaban una patria mejor: la del cielo. Por eso Dios no se avergüenza de ser llamado su Dios, pues les tenía preparada una ciudad.

Por su fe, Abraham, cuando Dios le puso una prueba, se dispuso a sacrificar a Isaac, su hijo único, garantía de la promesa, porque Dios le había dicho: De Isaac nacerá la descendencia que ha de llevar tu nombre. Abraham pensaba, en efecto, que Dios tiene poder hasta para resucitar a los muertos; por eso le fue devuelto Isaac, que se convirtió así en un símbolo profético.

EVANGELIO DEL DÍA

Lectura del santo Evangelio según San Lucas

Lc 12, 32-48

.

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus discípulos: “No temas, rebañito mío, porque tu Padre ha tenido a bien darte el Reino. Vendan sus bienes y den limosnas. Consíganse unas bolsas que no se destruyan y acumulen en el cielo un tesoro que no se acaba, allá donde no llega el ladrón, ni carcome la polilla. Porque donde está su tesoro, ahí estará su corazón.

Estén listos, con la túnica puesta y las lámparas encendidas. Sean semejantes a los criados que están esperando a que su señor regrese de la boda, para abrirle en cuanto llegue y toque. Dichosos aquellos a quienes su señor, al llegar, encuentre en vela. Yo les aseguro que se recogerá la túnica, los hará sentar a la mesa y él mismo les servirá. Y si llega a medianoche o a la madrugada y los encuentra en vela, dichosos ellos.

Fíjense en esto: Si un padre de familia supiera a qué hora va a venir el ladrón, estaría vigilando y no dejaría que se le metiera por un boquete en su casa. Pues también ustedes estén preparados, porque a la hora en que menos lo piensen vendrá el Hijo del hombre”.

Entonces Pedro le preguntó a Jesús: “¿Dices esta parábola sólo por nosotros o por todos?” El Señor le respondió: “Supongan que un administrador, puesto por su amo al frente de la servidumbre, con el encargo de repartirles a su tiempo los alimentos, se porta con fidelidad y prudencia. Dichoso este siervo, si el amo, a su llegada, lo encuentra cumpliendo con su deber. Yo les aseguro que lo pondrá al frente de todo lo que tiene. Pero si este siervo piensa: ‘Mi amo tardará en llegar’ y empieza a maltratar a los criados y a las criadas, a comer, a beber y a embriagarse, el día menos pensado y a la hora más inesperada, llegará su amo y lo castigará severamente y le hará correr la misma suerte que a los hombres desleales.

El servidor que, conociendo la voluntad de su amo, no haya preparado ni hecho lo que debía, recibirá muchos azotes; pero el que, sin conocerla, haya hecho algo digno de castigo, recibirá pocos.

Al que mucho se le da, se le exigirá mucho, y al que mucho se le confía, se le exigirá mucho más”.
